Every year, the North, Central American and Caribbean (NORCECA) volleyball tournament rolls into Grand Cayman and puts on an epic weekend of international sport right on our doorstep. Being able to beach walk to watch international volleyball (and we’re talking about some of the best teams in the world) on one of the most beautiful beaches on the planet, for free, isn’t something most people can do on an average weekend. So I refuse to take it for granted and always make a point of keeping the NORCECA weekend free so I can go and check out the action.
This year the Cayman teams really came out firing and the girls team in particular had an absolute cracker, with a historic 4th place finish and some thrilling matches along the way. We arrived just in time to grab a bucket of Corona before their quarter-final match which secured their place in the semi’s in straight sets. Stefania and Jess both have full-time jobs outside of volleyball and are an absolute inspiration – I’ve seen them training late into the evenings on so many occasions and they’re proof that if you work hard, you can achieve your dreams. It was so much fun watching them compete against top athletes and do so well!
High on the excitement from all the action on court we strolled (I skipped) home through the surf, taking a dip in the sea and watching the sunset as it disappeared behind the clouds along the way. Just another day in paradise.
