Get your skates on to Joe Beef

In my last post I promised you some more food reviews. But before you eat you have to work up an appetite and their aint no better way to get your stomach rumbling than (watching) a couple of hours of high-intensity sports!

One of the main selling points for booking a weekend in Montreal was catching a hockey game. I won’t pretend to be a die-hard follower of the NHL, but I am a fan on the game and whenever we get the chance, we love to watch it live. The Bell Centre, home of the Montreal Canadiens or “Habs” is renowned for being one of the best stadiums to watch game. We decided not to mess around with our ticket purchase and found ourselves sitting 6 rows from the ice, right behind the home bench. The frivolous spend was total worth it, we had an amazing view of the ice and the atmosphere was electric - the Bell Centre crew really know how to get their fans going. The whole match was a production surrounding the players who put on their own show, winning 2-1 in the last 60 seconds of the final period.

A nail biter to the end, we totally lost of track of time and only realized on the final whistle that we’d totally missed our dinner booking at Joe Beef #panic!

A frenizied taxi ride later, we pulled up outside the famous diner and realized that if you didn’t know about this place, you’d never find it. I thought it had closed down.

But as soon as we were inside the door I knew we were in the right place. At 10 o clock at night it was buzzing and rammed full to the rafters with chatty locals. Feeling embarrassed for being so late, I put on my best polite voice and asked the hostess if there was any way they’d honour our earlier reservation (as she turned others without reservations away at the door) and she cheerfully rewarded our commitment to the cities prized hockey team with the promise of a table as soon as one was vacated. Hungrily we took our place at the bar with a drink and watched as plates full of incredible food passed by in front of us.

Reading our greedy minds, our waiter brought us some appetizers to keep us going and by the time we were seated at our table we didn’t even need to look at the menu (which is scribbled on the walls if you need it!)

We pointed to dishes being devoured by other diners, took his recommendations and awaited our fortunes.

Schnitzel for me.

And a 20oz steak topped with super bacon for him.

The loaded potato that came with this was a meal in itself. Sadly we devoured half before I remember to take a picture.

By the time we’d finished we couldn’t move but I would eat the whole meal again in an instant. It was the best restaurant I have ever been to - the staff, the atmosphere, decor and dishes were absolutely spot on. Before you die, you should book a trip to Montreal and go to Joe Beef. It’s THAT good.
