The kite season is all but over in the Cayman Islands (although we have had some lucky, last minute wind - more on that to come) so the focus has been on finding other sports to keep us fit and healthy during the summer. I hate the gym and far prefer keeping fit by doing activities outdoors - especially when you live on a beautiful island! Recently I've gotten back into running, done a few sessions at bootcamp, and last night I played tennis - for the first time in a while! I've also been doing the 30 day ab challenge along with a few thousand other people - dubbed as the world's largest gym class - there really is something motivational about knowing that other people are doing it too!
But the moment I'm taking the most inspiration from watching my fiancé and his team mates train for the Cayman Rugby Team. For the last 6 months or so they have been taking part in the most intense fitness and skills training program I've seen in a long time. I used to be part of a national training squad for skiing and suddenly the memories come flooding back of what it's like to commit yourself 110% to a sport. And I quit long before my 30's….!
The hard work is paying off and last weekend, the boys smashed Bermuda in a convincing 24-3 win taking them up to 54th place in the global IRB rankings. I watched on, brimming with pride (and nerves) from the comfort of my friends sofa, enjoying alcoholic refreshments and fatty snacks whilst 15 guys ran around relentlessly for 90 minutes.
Their work rate, attitude and commitment is a force to be reckoned with as they prepare to take on USA South this weekend and I for one cannot wait to see them play and hopefully take the title they so well deserve.
They play at Truman Bodden this Saturday at 3pm. Tickets are still available - $15 in advance or $25 on the gate so you know what to do.
After watching this I feel like I should run there….
