I've posted a couple of times about an exciting new event I'm involved in which coming to our little island in the new year....and last night we officially launched The Rock International Open with the Cayman Islands Youth, Sport, Health & Culture Minister endorsing the event and kicking off a night of partying at Agua restaurant.
The event went really well with about 70 attendees from local business, media and the kite community and the good news is, sponsors are flooding in! Already signed up are Miller Lite, WATERMAN (my faves - ovo!), Kitesurf Cayman, Wakeboard Cayman (subject of my last post), Picture This studios, Evolving Island, Genesis, Z99 and now Agua!
So what the hell is TRIO? Well, Cayman has pretty the best kiting conditions I've ever experienced - and many other locals share that view. So as the windy season drew to a close earlier this year we decided to share our riches with other keen riders and invite them to compete in our waters. There's a severe lack of serious kitesurfing competition in this region, particularly after the removal of Cabarete from the PKRA world tour, and the BIllabong BVI Kite Jam is out of most regular people's budgets, so we figured it would be an easy sell. And it has been. Pro's from all over the world have been chomping at the bit to sign up and find out more so we're really excited about the soon-to-be-revaled competition line-up. For anyone who hasn't registered yet, here are the essential deets:
- 3 disciplines - Freestyle, Racing & Big Air
- Total prize money - a whopping $25,000. And women will get the same prizes as men :)
- Free accommodation for athletes
- 5 day VIP event schedule.
Did I mention the flat, clear, warm, turquoise waters and white sandy beaches?
