A new topic for this blog but one I think I'll include more often - home improvements. We moved house just over a month ago and I've had a quite a bit of fun making a bland rental into our home. As with any rented accommodation, the interior is never going to be as you would have it if you were buying it for yourself, and no one wants to spend a lot of money on something they're not going to live in for a long time. So I thought I'd share a few ideas for personalising a space without redecorating or changing the fittings and, most importantly, not breaking the bank.
All of the furniture in our new condo is pine and everything that isn't pine is a similar shade of brown which makes for a very warm and cosy environment but also makes you feel like you have just stepped into a ski chalet rather than a beach house. So this particular project was all about colorful accents and accessories.
My favorite bargain - Map letters from Urban Outfitters, $12 each or 2 for $20. The little heart tray which I'm using for studs, rings and bangles is from Urban Outfitters as well (its sold out but they have similar ones) while my necklaces are displayed on a tie and belt hanger!
I bought throws for each of the beds in the bedrooms - at $39 each they are well made and very vibrant. The tapestries can also be hung and I'm thinking that one day I'll have them stretched and framed for big feature wall. Nothing makes a house a home more than your own pictures and photos (this one's actually a free printable which you can get here.) Our lease agreement includes strict rules about damaging the walls with picture hooks and nails so I tried these no damage hanging strips available at AL Thompson in Cayman and they work! I took one down after 4 weeks just to check that I wasn't leaving stains on the walls and I can confirm that would never know that it had ever been there. The ducks are from the dollar store :)
There's still a bit of work to do - I'm working on a new painting to go above the guest bed and some crafty accessories for the kitchen and bathrooms but we're getting there! Right now I need to get ready for dinner. Place mats and napkins from Zara home.
