I can't believe it's actually been a whole year since I went to Cabarete, Dominican Republic for the first time! A few weeks ago I went back for a second time and loved it just as much as the first :)
It is such an awesome kiting spot, full of the friendliest people, great restaurants and pumping bars. What's not to love?!
One evening I had the chance to catch up with a friend from last year, Nadine, who was kiting on the PKRA circuit in 2011 and I was surprised to hear that she had taken a break from competing this year. We had a really good chat and she said some really inspiring things about enjoying kiting for what it was - fun. Lets be honest, some of us are not getting any younger and we need to keep reminding ourselves why we fell in love with the sport in the first place - something I realised a few months ago following my foot injuries. It's easy to get caught up in the competitiveness of a growing sport but there are so many ways that we can still challenge ourselves without focusing on the high powered tricks - strapless, wave riding, old school, race.....
I also had the pleasure of meeting Katie Bowcutt, arguably the talent in Cabarete right now. 15 year old Katie is already ripping and riding for F-One. Not only is she throwing tricks to rival the boys she rides with, but she kills it on a surfboard as well. Bubbly, cute and outgoing, I'm looking forward to interviewing Katie among some other Cabarete resident kite surfers for my next Kitegirl article...more on that soon :)
